A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada, as he is commonly known to his descendents, was to be the personality empowered to spread Krishna Consciousness all over the world. Born in India in a Vaisnava family, and having spent his life dedicated to the study and translation of the Vedic literatures, in August 1965 he sailed from Calcutta to New York and single-handedly started a worldwide movement, which he called ISKCON – The International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

His life story is phenomenal, and until his departure in 1977, he left behind a legacy of hundreds of spiritual centres which his disciples continue to expand. Most importantly, he translated, wrote and published over 100 volumes of literature on devotional service, on whose authority the movement is based.
